Have additional anti-terrorist measures been taken in response to the recent attacks?

In response to the attacks in the United Stateson 11 September 2001, the attacks in Madridon 11 March 2004, the murder of Theo van Gogh on 2 November 2004and the attacks in Londonand Sharm el-Sheikh in July 2005, the government is working to prevent terrorism in the Netherlands.

  • It has invested heavily to increase the capacity of the intelligence and security services.
  • The exchange of information between the intelligence services and law enforcement authorities has been improved.
  • New legislation has been developed to combat terrorism more effectively and prosecute perpetrators; recruiting for the jihad (‘holy war’) has been made a criminal offence; terrorist organisations can be declared illegal and their activities prohibited; and it will be possible to use information from the AIVD in criminal cases.
  • The Surveillance and Protection System has been revised, allowing appropriate measures to be taken in response to specific threats.
  • Dozens of measures laid down in the 2001 Counterterrorism and Security Action Plan have already been implemented.
