International initiatives
Since 11 September 2001, the EU member states have stepped up their joint efforts to combat terrorism. The European Union has appointed a security coordinator whose tasks are to harmonise the counterterrorism activities of the member states and ensure that the police and intelligence services cooperate and exchange information effectively.
